Heavy rainfall yesterday afternoon led to flash flooding across much of Harrow, with more downpours predicted for today.

The Met Office issued a flood warning last night which remains in place today. Torrential, thundery rain is expected to continue across the borough into Friday morning.

“Please be prepared for the potential for very severe weather conditions bringing flash flooding and disruption to transport,” read a Met Office statement.

Police and fire crews were working together this morning to close severely flooded roads, syphon water away and handing out sandbags to residents.

Roads across Harrow became submerged in the deluge yesterday, with cars seen attempting to cross particularly waterlogged areas in South Ruislip and South Harrow.

Commuters awoke this morning to delays on several lines, compounded by strikes on the Hammersmith & City and Circle lines.

Harrow Council spokesperson Masooma Sarwar said: "We have around 70 working flood defences and a number of flood improvement schemes in place.

"This year we cleared some drains to prevent repeat flooding and we are pleased that the level of flooding is less severe than previous instances of flash flooding.

"We will continue to work with Thames Water and the Environmental Agency to improve and reduce the impact of flash flooding."
