The Chinese Ambassador has been invited to Harrow to witness working diversity in the wake of the Air China racism scandal.

China’s national airline published advice to tourists that precautions were needed in ethnic minority areas – particularly those with prominent Indian, Pakistani, and Black communities – in its in-flight magazine.

Navin Shah, London Assembly Member for Brent and Harrow, said the comments were “deeply offensive”, and offered the invite to Ambassador Liu Xiaoming to demonstrate how the local community is “warm, friendly and welcoming”.

It went on to say “we advise tourists not to go out alone at night, and females always to be accompanied by another person when travelling”.

“I am sure that the hurtful and offensive comments in the magazine do not represent the views of the Chinese Government or people, and I am sure the Chinese community here will be horrified by this story,” he said.

“I have invited the Ambassador in order to demonstrate that we are warm, friendly and welcoming people, and there is nothing to fear.

“Harrow has one of the largest populations of Indians outside India, and Brent has large Black and Pakistani communities. These communities should be celebrated for their contributions, and making Brent and Harrow such vibrant places to live.

“I hope the Ambassador takes up my invitation and enjoys the wonderful retail opportunities, and especially the mouthwatering food we have to offer.”

Mr Shah has also written to the airline to request a corrective article in their next magazine that would actively promote diverse parts of London, such as Brent and Harrow, to Chinese tourists.
