A HARROW team who won the BBC’s popular quiz show Eggheads have praised their teammate as ‘the hero of the hour’.

Howard Bluston was the last of his team left to take on the titular Eggheads – some of the best quizzers in the UK – in the final round of the programme when it was broadcast at 6.30pm on Friday.

He won on the final question, which he got right by guessing while the Eggheads got it wrong, winning £15,000 for himself and his team – the Acorn Antiques.

The former Labour councillor for Green Hill said: “It was a really wonderful time going up to Glasgow in January for the filming and it’s been very hard keeping a lid on the result for this long.

“The win was sheer luck, all I had was my logic to help me. It definitely took some of the pressure off that we had no idea there was £15,000 riding on it.

“We didn’t do it for the money, we definitely did it for the glory. It’s a rare thing to beat the Eggheads and we’re very proud of ourselves.”

The Acorn Antiques were put together by Stephen Phillips, chair of the Acorn Lawn tennis club in Edgware, from club committee members as well as a couple of Stephen’s neighbours like Howard.

Stephen, who wasn’t on the team for the show, said: “It was a terribly exciting show that went right down to the nail.

“We’re not especially big quizzers, just a bunch of old boys who love the show and fancied giving it a go. I’m very proud of the five on the team for what they have achieved.”

Howard was joined on the team by Matthew Rooum, Derek Smith, Valentin Schiedermair and Jeremy Reese.
