A man from Harrow has been shortlisted for a national diversity award.

Asif Iqbal MBE, president of Harrow United Deaf Club, is in the running for the Positive Role Model Award for Race, Faith and Religion at this year’s National Diversity Awards.

“I was extremely stunned to receive an email informing me that I have been shortlisted for this award,” he said.

“I am thrilled and inspired by the quality of all the nominations. In short, I am extremely honoured to be recognised for my passion and voluntary work, working closely with local diversity communities to make a difference in their lives.”

Mr Iqbal started getting involved in voluntary works at the age of 15. Since then, he has dedicated himself to community service by working with various charities and volunteer groups.

As a result of his work with Harrow Council, the borough became only the second in London to sign up to the British Sign Language Charter in October 2015. The charter ensures deaf people across Harrow are afforded better access to council services.

As a former Harrow Arts Centre ambassador, Mr Iqbal set up the first ever British Sign Language Christmas pantomime, seen as a great success for the deaf community.

The black tie awards ceremony will be presented by ITV news presenter Charlene White and TV presenter Ortis Deley in Liverpool on September 16.
