A Harrow MP is one of 65 Conservatives to criticise George Osborne’s proposed post-Brexit emergency budget.
Mr Osborne said tax increases and cuts to the NHS could be major features of an emergency budget that he would be forced to impose should Britain vote to leave the EU.
However Bob Blackman, MP for Harrow East, joined his fellow Tory MPs in slating the Chancellor’s fiscal forecast, which they described as “absurd”.
65 Conservative MPs signed a letter to Mr Osborne saying the imposition of an emergency budget would “renege on so many manifesto pledges”.
The group, which includes Iain Duncan Smith, Liam Fox and Owen Paterson, said it would not back the “punishment budget”.
Senior Conservative figures also accused the Treasury of scaremongering, and stated the Chancellor’s position would become “untenable” if he chose to go ahead with such measures.
