FRIENDS and family of a teenager who died of lung cancer was honoured with a football tournament in his memory.

Sean McCormack, of Harrow Weald, was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2008, and Sunday June 12 will mark seven years since he passed away.

Sean was treated for lung cancer at UCL hospital in London, but died in June 2009, just weeks away from his 19 birthday.

His friends wanted to do something to remember Sean, and as he was an avid football supporter, they organised a football tournament one year after Sean’s death, and the event has run every year since.

Pupils of all ages from Sean’s former school St Joseph’s, made up eight teams to compete in the tournament at The Hive, Camrose Avenue, Edgware, on Saturday May 28.

Sean’s mother, Sue McCormack, said Sean was lucky to have such a great group of friends.

Ms McCormack, who still lives in Harrow Weald with sons Paul and Jack, said: “There is always a big turnout at the tournament, it make me feel really humble that so many friends and young people turn up every year to remember Sean.

“It’s a day full of mixed feelings, but they have arranged the event every year since Sean’s death and it is a way to remember him, and to keep his memory alive.

“It was hard for his friends to see him dying, but Sean picked his friends well, they are a great bunch of people. Daniel Bond, in particular, who organises it all, is one in a million, and he and others have raised thousands over the years.”

The event supports a different charity every year, and Mrs McCormack chose Ali’s dream for 2016.

Ali’s dream was launched in June 2001, following the death of Alison Phelan who suffered from a brain tumour.

She died three weeks away from her eight birthday.

This year’s target is set at £500 and you can donate to Ali’s dream at
