Families living in an Edgware cul-de-sac say the council has kept them in the dark for months over a dangerous broken street light.

The street light in Gweneth Cottages, off Mead Road, went out in October leaving the street "pitch black" throughout the winter months.

Residents said their children, homes, vehicles and personal safety were put at risk - but even after numerous communications with the council nothing was done to fix it.

Father of two Nick Harris said: "How many online forms does it take for Harrow Council to change a lightbulb?"

He explained it was so dark most afternoons he couldn't see the door to unlock it with his key.

The 45-year-old and his neighbours filled out online forms notifying Harrow Council of the fault but it remained broken for four months.

The estate agent said: "We've all got kids, anyone could break into a car or our houses. I cannot even see the front door to put my key in.

"I have real safety concerns living like this, we're very vulnerable down here. We don't get the benefit of any other street light.

"I sent two online forms and an online complaint, I know my neighbour completed the forms as well.

"Trying to call and speak to anyone has been impossible. It's very frustrating, I shouldn't have to shout and scream for the council to take notice."

Mr Harris questioned the online system of alerting the authority to faults.

He said: "The online forms are meant to be easier to put these problems through, but what's the point if they don't do anything - there was no response and no action.

"I'm completely fed up, we've all got better things to do than spend time filling out these forms.

"I want an explanation as to why they've not fixed the light, why they've not responded.

"I've got two children, my neighbours have small children - we're families on this street - we can't keep living in the dark."

Harrow Council said its contractors visited the cul-de-sac today and carried out repairs.

A spokesman said: “Our contractors visited the site today and repaired two lamps. The lighting columns in Gweneth Cottages are being replaced as part of our new lighting scheme. There is one new lamp post which will be turned on shortly.”
