A three-train crash that killed 112 people and injured 340 took place 63 years ago today.

During the morning rush hour of October 8, 1952, an overnight express train from Perth crashed at speed into the rear of a passenger train standing at a platform at Harrow and Wealdstone Station.

The wreckage of both trains spread across the station before being hit a second time by a "double-headed" express train heading to Liverpool travelling north at 60 mph.

A total of 16 vehicles, including 13 coaches and a kitchen car, were destroyed or severely damaged in the collisions.

Records report that 112 people died in the collisions, including the driver and fireman of the Perth express and the driver of the lead engine of the Liverpool express and 108 passengers.

It is believed 102 passengers and staff died at the scene, with ten dying later in hospital from their injuries.
