From singing round the camp fire to raising money with bake sales, one guide leader has proved a dedicated ‘inspiration’ to her group of girls.

As of this month, volunteer Joanna Mindell will be stepping up to the oche as she takes over the role as guider in charge of 10th Pinner Guides.

She and her team of leaders, who include Vikki Jeeves, Sue Levy, Jessica Rifkind and Helen Cripps, have been running the group for between three and 25 years.

Previously under the leadership of Ann Simon, the group now run the club in their own right and have more than 24 guides, aged ten to 14-years-old, under their responsibility.

Meeting in the Cyril Rashbass Hall in Pinner Synagogue every Tuesday evening, the guides are given the opportunity to learn crafts, go on outings and play games with this friends.

The team of leaders also organise and run residential events, using up their own work holiday entitlement for the benefit of the guides.

After several years with the group, she has now been nominated for the Volunteer Team Award at this year’s Harrow’s Heroes competition.

The award aims to recognise teamwork in an outstanding project or activity that has benefited the community, or the exceptional contribution of a group of volunteers in a committee or trustee role.

The nomination form read: “Joanna and the rest of the team attend guides every week and during the week they speak very often to ensure the smooth running of the programme.

“Their aim is to teach the guides to lead the programmes themselves and the girls are exceptionally lucky to have a dedicated team as their constant role models.

“They teach the girls commitment, life skills and how to become leaders in their own right.

“It is through the inspiration of the team that the girls have been enthused to work within the guide programme.”

Along with her work with the 10th Pinner Guides, Joanna is also very active with the community at the synagogue.

Last November, she coordinated a bag-packing event for Mitzvah Day – a day where community members come together to volunteer for charities across the world.

The group, including Joanna, packed 72 large bags of clothes for The Together Plan and four crates of toiletries for the Harrow Food Bank.

Anyone who wants to give their volunteers recognition on social media can tweet about their accomplishments using the hashtag #shoutoutHarrow.

Heroes can be nominated for seven awards, including the Bringing People Together Award, Community Champion Award, Gold Star Lifelong Volunteer Award, Inspiring Volunteer Award and awards for young volunteers and teams.

Judges will also present one winner with the overall Harrow’s Heroes award.

All winners will receive a crystal trophy and a cash prize for their chosen charity, and all nominees will be invited to the awards ceremony on November 3 and will receive a certificate of recognition.

The deadline for nominations has now been extended until Monday, September 7.
