A disabled man says he is a “prisoner in his own home” after a lift broke down leaving him stranded in his second floor flat.

The only lift in a three-storey block of flats in Brookshill, Harrow, has been out of action for more than a week, leaving disabled and elderly residents with problems getting out of their homes.

Jonathan Barnet, who lives on his own in a second-floor flat, said neighbours have been forced to pick him up in his wheelchair and carry him up the stairs and he has clambered down the stairs on his bottom in order to get out of his home.

The 52-year-old suffers from multiple sclerosis and is wheelchair bound.

He told the Harrow Times: “I am a prisoner in my own home.

“I live on the middle floor which means, because I am wheelchair bound, I rely on the lift to get outside. If it is broke, I can’t get out.

“I have been outside once and that involved clambering down the stairs.

“All they [the lift repair team] have done is come down and say one thing. But then they have said it is a different thing and they need a certain part and that is a difficult part to get. It is not like I am 92 and not going anywhere anyway. I have two kids who I want to go out with.

“What am I supposed to do? Let them see me sliding down the stairs? I do not think so.

“There were two people who lived in one of the other flats who lifted me up and got me up to my flat. It is very demeaning.”

The father-of-two has now revealed he is planning to move out of the flat and into his parent’s home until the lift is repaired.

He added: “I want some compensation for this because I am paying a service charge but I am not receiving the service."

Mr Barnet pays £260 a month for the service charge in his flat. Service charges cover repairs and the upkeep of common areas in a block of flats, including gardens, common hallways and entry doors.

Wawrick Estates has confirmed engineers were sent out to the block of flats on Sunday, July 19 and again on Monday, July 20.

Amalgamated Lifts, who is in charge of repairing the broken lift, has been approached by the Harrow Times for a comment but had not received a response at the time of going to press.
