School friends and football fans have paid tribute to a former Harrow schoolboy who was killed in the Tunisia beach massacre.

A former pupil of Haydon School, in Wiltshire Lane, Pinner, Watford man Chris Dyer was shot in the head as he and his wife Gina Van Dort ran for cover into the Imperial Marhaba hotel garden.

Mr Dyer had been enjoying the second week of his holiday in Tunisia with his 30-year-old wife of two years, tweeting photos of the pair at the hotel and visiting a nearby amphitheatre.

He has shot down by the gunman as the couple attempted to flee, while his wife was shot in the face as she clung to his body.

She was left unable to speak and medics say she has lost an eye, but was flown back to the UK today for further treatment.

The ex-marathon runner and biker attended the Pinner school between 1994 and 1999, where he sat his GCSEs.

School friend James Mott, who lived in Northwood Hills as a child, tweeted: “R.I.P old school pal and Watford fan @chrisdyer83 who got caught up in the Tunisia attacks.”

Classmate Minesh Patel tweeted: “Rip Chris Dyer. Was a friend at school and was killed by that gutless Tunisian! So sad and I pray for his wife who is fighting for her life.

“Had not seen him for 15 years, only saw him recently. Lovely guy and big personality.”

Mr Dyer suffered from reactive arthritis and depression, but was a big sports fan and member of the Watford Gracie Jiu-Jitsu.

The club released a montage video of Mr Dyer on their Facebook page, adding: “It is with great sorrow that we announce the tragic death of our teammate Chris Dyer as a result of the Tunisia shootings.

“Our hearts go out to his family. May he rest in peace.”

A fund has been started by fellow Watford FC supporters in memory of the engineer, who lived in Westfield Avenue, Watford.

A tribute on the GoFundMe page reads: "Chris is a big fan of Watford Football Club. He went on holiday, to enjoy a nice break with his partner and didn't return home.

"This fund has been set up to support Chris' family as they try to recover from this horrible ordeal. I'm sure your financial support would be greatly appreciated as things like funeral costs can be quite extortionate.

"This fund will also help Gina, as she continues to fight through her own battle in hospital.

"Thank you for your support. Rest in peace Chris Dyer."

A minute’s silence will be observed  at midday on Friday, July 3 for those who lost their lives in the attack.

In a speech in the House of Commons on June 25, Prime Minister David Cameron said: “These were innocent British holidaymakers, people who had saved up for a special time away with their friends and family, and who suddenly became the victims of the most brutal terrorist attack against British people for many years.

“I am sure the whole House will join me in sending our deepest condolences to the families and friends of all those who have lost loved ones.”
