A woman who previously worked as a school teacher in Nigeria has been elected the new Mayor of Brent.
Councillor Lesley Jones was elected as the new Mayor of Brent at a meeting at Brent Civic Centre last night.
Cllr Lesley Jones, who lives in Dollis Hill and represents Willesden Green ward, has been a councillor for 17 years and served as deputy mayor last year.
Her first public engagement will be conducting a citizenship ceremony in Brent's Civic Centre today.
Cllr Jones said: "I'm delighted to have been elected by my colleagues as Mayor of Brent for the coming year.
"There is a packed and exciting calendar of events and I look forward to meeting lots of residents, community groups and businesses.
“I would like to thank the outgoing Mayor Councillor Kana Naheerathan for his hard work last year".
Cllr Parvez Ahmed was appointed deputy mayor.
