Harrow's outgoing Mayor made his last official visit a worthy one when he promoted walking to school.

Mayor Councillor Ajay Maru joined Councillor Simon Brown and headteacher Iain Sutherland to launch Walk to School Week at Grimsdyke School, Hatch End.

On his last mayoral visit before handing on his chain of office, Cllr Maru presented awards to winners of a poster competition.

He also congratulated the school’s new junior travel ambassadors, who will encourage their friends and classmates to walk to and from school.

He said: “I am glad that my last official event as mayor is for such a worthy cause. It was great to see so many of you walk to school this morning, and I hope you will keep on walking, long after this week is over.

“It makes you healthier, fitter and ready to excel at your school work, even on a rainy day like today.”

Cllr Brown added: “Grimsdyke School and its pupils are making great strides in reducing pollution and traffic here in Hatch End.

“Just like these young ambassadors, the council is committed to reducing car use here, and supporting and helping parents to walk their children to school.”
