Crates of clothing, dried and tinned food, medicine and blankets have been collected by a restaurant in the aftermath of the two earthquakes in Nepal.

Staff at the Nepalese Golden Sip Restaurant in South Harrow have spent the past few weeks packing boxes of clothes, food and cash that have been donated by customers.

The restaurant owners Sanat Gurung and his wife Sajani appealed for help after the first earthquake killed more than 8,000 people in Nepal.

They were in Nepal visiting family at the time the first earthquake stuck, and described the horror of finding unclaimed bodies lying in hospital corridors in the wake of the disaster.

Organised in collaboration with the South Harrow Traders Association, the restaurant held a ‘collectathon’ for goods and cash for the appeal on May 12, followed by a charity supper on May 13 held to coincide with the restaurant’s second anniversary.

All donations will be taken to Nepal by Sanat Gurung and his brother Deb Gurung to ensure they reach those in the most need.

Sanat Gurung said: “It’s very important to donate and help, because so many people have been affected.

“We want to go out there and be sure those who need it most, in the worst affected areas, get any help we can give them.”

Jay Parmar, of the South Harrow Traders Association, said: “The night’s success was quite overwhelming to say the least.

“I was personally humbled and very touched at the attendance by so many people and moreover the generosity they showed and Mr and Mrs Gurung and Mr Deb Gurung, along with all their staff and members of the association were rewarded by the success of the evening.”

A total of £8,000 was donated by diners during the course of the night and The Golden Sip management added a personal donation of £2,000 taking the night’s total collection to £10,000.

More donations are still needed and anyone wishing to make any donations can contact the Golden Sip on 020 8426 6300 directly and make donations by phone.
