Candidates pledged to listen to people with learning disabilities at a campaign event.

Ten candidates across Harrow East, Harrow West and Ruislip, Northwood and Pinner attended an event organised by Harrow Mencap to discuss issues raised by people with learning disabilities.

The event was part of Mencap’s ‘Hear my voice’ campaign, which is about empowering people with a learning disability to have their voices heard by their candidates as the General Election approaches.

Candidates from the Conservatives, Labour, Green, UKIP and the Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition Parties attended the event, along with more than 100 people with learning disabilities and their carers.

Mencap chief executive Jan Tregelles said: “It is encouraging to see so many candidates listening to people with a learning disability and their families about the problems they face and the change they want to see in the next Parliament.

“They are the experts in what matters to them, so prospective candidates should be listening to what they have to say when they are out on the campaign trail.”

Voters asked questions on a wide range of issues including affordable housing in Harrow, disability hate crime hate, support to live independently and many more.

All of the candidates confirmed their support for the Hear my voice campaign and signed-up to say they are listening to the voices of people with a learning disability on the new Hear my voice website www.hear-my-voice-org-uk
