A man whose day job is looking after pupils at a Harrow school is discovering that football can take you to all sorts of exotic places.

Adrian Creamer, pastoral manager at Stanmore College, was invited to act as a goalkeeping coach by head coach Gary White for the Pacific island nation of Guam for its international friendly matches with Hong Kong and Singapore - and will now be involved in the team's World Cup qualifying campaign.

Mr Creamer was invited to join the team - now the sixth strongest team national team in the East Asia football federation - by head coach Gary White last month.

The federation includes Japan, North & South Korea, and China, and the island is no longer afraid to challenge far larger nations on the pitch.

Mr Creamer said: “Guam is climbing up the rankings and it is down to the way Gary White operates.

“Guam has gone from being ranked 197 in the world to being in and around 160 – that is a staggering level of progress. The belief has been transformed within the squad.

“There was a time when it was simply a case of playing to keep the score down and that definitely isn’t the case anymore. For the matches against Hong Kong and Singapore there was a genuine belief that the team could win.”

Although Guam lost 1-0 against Hong Kong in their first international game on March 28, they were able to come back to draw 2-2 against Singapore in their second game.

The two coaches have remained in touch through social media, and Mr Creamer will continue his own hectic schedule before his next international trip in June.

He added: “Initially it was just for the two games, but I’ve since been asked to stay involved for the upcoming World Cup qualifying campaign which is brilliant.

“It was an amazing experience. It is one I want to build on because it was the highlight of my career so far.”
