High streets in Harrow have been ranked among the ten healthiest in London.

Research from the Royal Society for Public Health looks at how businesses on the high street can impact the health of the public, and the society has created league tables of the "unhealthiest" and “healthiest” high streets across London.

In Harrow, three streets have made the top ten healthiest in the capital – with Stanmore ranking third, Pinner fourth and Kingsbury sixth among the 144 high streets surveyed.

The 32-page report looks at the number of chemists, gyms and doctors' surgeries in high streets, in comparison to the amount of fast food outlets, bookmakers and pay day loan lenders.

Aiming to work with businesses to better improve the health of their community, the campaign also tries to ensure local authorities have the powers they need to curtail business practices which may undermine the public’s health.

Councillor Anne Whitehead said: “It is great to hear that Pinner and Stanmore are named in the top ten list of healthy high streets in London.  As a council we are committed to improving the physical and mental health and wellbeing of our residents.

"We want Harrow to be a healthy place to live with vibrant high streets which encourage healthy choices. We are supporting takeaways and other food outlets to reduce the amount of fat, salt and sugar used during food preparation.

"We are also taking steps to limit oversaturation of unhealthy fast food outlets and licensed premises in the borough.

"Across all our parks we have also introduced green gyms so residents can exercise outdoors for free to improve their health and wellbeing.”
