Wetlands will be transformed after almost 1,000 people voted to have it improved in an online poll.

The Stanmore Marsh Restoration Scheme is one of seven projects across the capital that was shortlisted for funding by the Mayor’s Big Green Fund in January.

Londoners were invited to vote online for their favourite scheme and, with more than 10,000 votes cast overall, Mayor of London Boris Johnson has decided that each should get a share of the £900,000 fund.

Stanmore Marsh – which pulled in 980 votes - has been award £175,000 of the sum to improve the quality of the underused wetland and green open space, and provide a better environment for a more diverse wildlife.

Cllr Keith Ferry, who is responsible for business, planning and regeneration, said: “We are delighted to have been successful in our application for funding to redevelop Stanmore Marsh.

“This money will make it possible for us to restore the historic marshlands in Harrow and open the area up for residents to enjoy.

“Natural habitats for fauna and flora are reducing across the country and this marshland will help us to increase the biodiversity in the area. Green spaces are vital for the wellbeing of the community.”

Work is expected to start on the marsh in the coming months.  and it is hoped to open by the end of next year.
