A primary school will receive a £250,000 government loan for its expansion plans.

Whitefriars Primary School, in Whitefriars Avenue, Wealdstone, will receive the cash from the Government to help pay for the creation of a 750-place secondary school and 150 place sixth Form.

In a meeting held between Harrow East MP Bob Blackman, headteacher Chris Spruce and schools minister David Laws, financial projections were discussed and a case put forward for a funding arrangement to allow the expansion to continue on schedule.

Executive headteacher Chris Spruce said: “The directors of our academy trust and I are deeply grateful to Bob for his tireless efforts on behalf of our school and our community.

“This loan, approved by Mr Laws, will top up our start-up funding to ensure we can deliver an outstanding through-school from day one in our state-of-the-art building.”

The injection of funds will be used to ensure that the academy trust can meet needs for new staffing and resources as well as facilities management costs for the new 9,000sq m landmark building for its opening this September.

Bob Blackman said: “This is tremendous news for Whitefriars School and our area overall, as we have a real need for more quality secondary school places to accommodate our expanding population.

“Whitefriars is already known to be an excellent school with high levels of attainment for pupils so I know this news is going to be very welcome to a lot of local families.

“I commend the schools minister for being both willing to listen and for taking quick action to help the process along and also Chris Spruce for his leadership and vision in taking the steps needed to see this expansion through.”
