Harrow Council has hit back after Prime Minister David Cameron criticised it as inefficient.

In a visit to South Harrow on Saturday, Prime Minister David Cameron criticised Harrow Council for cuts of £83 to services.

Labour councillors said the cuts were solely the result of government cuts to local authorities, but Mr Cameron said he did not accept that, adding that the council is not being as efficient as it should.

Cllr David Perry, leader of Harrow Council, said: "It would appear that David Cameron is blatantly misleading the people of Harrow. What the Prime Minister failed to say was that his government has imposed £83m of cuts on Harrow Council, our residents and our community.

“Harrow Council has made huge efficiencies over many years and even in this year's budget over 50 per cent of identified reductions are from back office savings - however the huge damaging cuts David Cameron has imposed on Harrow Council has gone way beyond any kind of modest reduction.

“The Tories are lacking in leadership, responsibility and have been playing politics with the community when they refused to propose any amendments to the recent council budget. On one hand the Tories portray a sense of crocodile tears, and when the opportunity arises, they fail in their responsibility to formally propose any of alternatives.

“Despite finding ourselves in this impossible position, my Labour administration will continue to fight for Harrow and campaign for more funding and a fairer government grant, a campaign the local Tory councillors refuse to support."
