High streets, businesses and community groups will receive funding to help revitalise Harrow.

Mayor of London Boris Johnson has pledged to fund 25 large borough-led projects, including £224,200 to help re-establish Station Road, Harrow, as a shopping and leisure destination.

Proposals include shop front and public realm improvements, improvements to signage and a new traders association.

This award is in addition to the almost £2.6 million investment the Mayor of London has already made in Harrow town centre and North Harrow with the Outer London Fund.

Boris Johnson said: “The imagination, enterprise and creativity of Londoners has shone through in the array of ideas that were put forward to the High Street Fund.

“London’s high streets are no longer about retail alone and I am thrilled to be supporting projects that seek to diversify and unlock opportunities in our most prized urban assets.”

The Mayor of London has also allocated up to £9 million through crowdfunding website Spacehive, where community groups are able to post their ideas and ask for financial support.

A total of 83 groups submitted ideas and the Mayor will be pledging up to £20,000 each to 17 of these projects.

The grants awarded through the Mayor’s High Street Fund will be invested in 42 high streets across London, including 25 larger borough-led projects and 17 community-led projects.

This investment has led to around £20 million of match funding from local authorities and private sector partners.

Deputy leader of Harrow Council, Keith Ferry said: “This funding is another leap forward for the people of Harrow and comes closely after the GLA awarded Harrow £31.3 million of funding for our Housing Zone.  This money will help revitalise the underused Station Road and make it a thriving high street with a range of different businesses.

“We will now work closely with businesses, residents and the community to improve Station Road, and create a local partnership and identity for the shopping parades.  As a council we are working hard to help existing businesses grow and encourage new ones to set-up in Harrow.”
