Campaigners hoping to save a library from closure have put forward their ideas.

Harrow Borough Council last year earmarked four libraries for closure in its next budget.

Members of the Bob Lawrence Library campaign team held a public meeting last week to announce plans they believe can pay for the running of the library and make a surplus to pay for community development projects.

They will present their petition and ideas at Harrow Council's next meeting on Thursday.

A campaign team spokesman said: “The team has worked hard to provide a viable way forward in keeping the library operational.

“We are willing to work with Harrow Council to find a workable solution to keeping the library open and fully staffed, and to develop a social enterprise to take these exciting ideas forward.

“We hope the council will take these ideas and concepts into consideration when they make their final decision at the next council meeting.

“Residents have made it clear that they value the service in Mollison Way. The petition to save the library has already received more than 5,000 signatures with a steady stream still coming in.”

In January, the campaign team presented Councillor Sue Anderson, who is responsible for community, culture and resident engagement, with initial ideas for partnership and funding to keep the library open, along with petitions showing support for the campaign.

The council provided floor plans for the library and the campaign team was able to work with architects on ideas including modernising services creating a new look library.

Ideas include increasing opening hours from 39.5 hours a week to 48, offering print services and language classes and setting up community clubs.

The team will present its petition at Harrow Council's meeting at Harrow Civic Centre in Station Road on Thursday at 7.30pm.
