Students are calling for their university to back a campaign to help overseas students remain in the UK.

Students at the University of Westminster's Harrow campus are calling for the vice chancellor’s support to the nationwide We Are International campaign.

The campaign supports the post-study work visa and opposes including international students in proposed immigration cuts.

International students have now teamed up with the university’s career development centre to hold workshops to provide international students with visa advice and career management skills.

Final-year Brazilian student Andrea Leonel de Meneses said: “The new work visa imposes unrealistic conditions for us and it is unfair since we have paid over £35,000 in fees up front, plus the same amount in cost of living.

“I want to have the opportunity to gain more experience in the UK, and I believe all international students deserve this too.”

The campaign highlights strict regulations that force foreign students back to their home countries after they graduate, after each having paid £35,000 for their three-year degree.

The previous work visa allowed them to work in the UK for up to two years after finishing their degree.

Campaign leader Jose Diaz De Aguilar Puiggari, of the University of Sheffield said: “After investing so much money into their education in the UK, international students have a very limited ability of finding a job in the UK. The current access to employment is so restrictive that it is not far from denial.

“International students deserve better treatment if we want to be a welcoming country.”
