An elderly woman is in hospital after a stranger stole her handbag.

An unidentified man grabbed the bag from the 84-year-old after approaching her in The Grove, Edgware, on January 10 at around 5.45pm.

As he snatched the bag from her hands, the woman fell to the floor – breaking her hip and dislocating her shoulder.

The suspect, who is described as a white man wearing navy blue clothing, is believed to have been carrying a walking stick or aid at the time of the attack in order to appear less threatening.

Detective Sergeant Tom Pearse, Barnet CID, said: “This is a particularly abhorrent attack during which the elderly and vulnerable victim received substantial injuries.

“We are appealing to anybody who may have seen the incident or know who is responsible to contact police urgently.”

Anyone with information is urged to call Barnet CID on 020 8733 4125.
