Pupils from four schools pitched ideas to ‘dragons’ on improving travel and road safety around schools.

Youth Travel Ambassadors from Bentley Wood School, Harrow High School, Hatch End High School and Park High School pitched their proposals to win funding and support for school safety campaigns.

Campaigns included a docu-drama and film about anti-social behaviour on buses, a film about the health and social benefits of walking, a road safety workshop and a competition about hazard perception, distractions and awareness on the road.

Judges included Councillor Varsha Parmar, senior road safety officer Jeffrey Sarpong, travel planner Annabelle Fosu and Nisha Durgacharan from Transport for London, who praised the pupils for their hard work.

Both Hatch End High and Bentley Wood High schools were awarded £125, while Harrow High received £100 and Park High received £150.

Each team will now use the money to start implementing their proposals to improve travel and safety issues around their schools.

Cllr Parmar, who is responsible for community safety, said: “I was really impressed with how passionate our Youth Travel Ambassadors are in improving the travel and safety issues raised by young people in the borough.

“I’d like to say a big well done to all the schools that pitched their idea. They were all well thought through, and highlighted issues on travel and safety affecting their peers. I am pleased that they have been awarded some funding for their projects.

“With this, we will provide them with advice and support to help take their ideas forward to improve travel and safety around schools.”
