Doctors feared this 21-month-old girl would never smile - but she has now been nominated for a national award after surviving against all odds.

After Keleigh Watson’s waters broke at just 19 weeks, doctors were forced to delay labour for another seven weeks until Sofia-Hope Hogan was born on April 22, 2013 - weighing only 900g.

The baby had two bleeds on her brain on top of other severe complications, including being diagnosed with quadriplegic cerebral palsy and epilepsy.

She underwent heart surgery, but was able to go home after spending 109 days at Northwick Park Hospital.

Keleigh, 24, said:  "I want to thank Northwick Park hospital and their neonatal unit- especially Dr Nicholls, Grace and Faith who were brilliant."

Doctors warned the family that Sofia might never smile, walk or talk – but Sofia-Hope has defied all expectations and has come off oxygen, smiles regularly and even started shuffling for a short time.

Miss Watson added: “Sofia does things smiling despite all her problems and that’s what I love most about her. Her local A&E adore her, she is the happiest baby. She can use her right arm and she does things ‘the Sofia way’.

“When she first started to say mum I cried and now she’s started to say dad which is an amazing feeling. She is a real-life miracle and she’s my hero.

“It was difficult pregnancy, but throughout all of it, I had this instinct that she would survive. Now I just want to support her to reach her maximum potential.”

Although Keleigh has now become Sofia’s full time carer, she has nominated Sofia-Hope for children's charity Tommy’s Little Angels Little Champion Award, which recognises the courage and determination shown by a child born prematurely.

Jane Brewin, chief executive of Tommy’s, said: “Sofia-Hope is a real marvel and we were incredibly moved to hear about how far she has progressed against all the odds. It’s a real testament to her parents’ love and support how far she’s come.

"We are delighted to shortlist her for the Little Angels Little Champion Award.”

Winners will be announced at the Tommy’s Awards in a star-studded ceremony at the Landmark Hotel, London, on Friday, March 20.
