In May it was revealed that the then Mayor of Harrow overspent during her year in office by nearly £45,000.

Councillor Nana Asante was given a budget of £182,740, for functions, support staff and travel, but spent a total of £227,326.

Leader of the then opposition Labour group Cllr David Perry called the overspend “disgraceful” and unfair on the taxpayer.

Harrow Borough Council said the mayor attended more than 450 different engagements during the year and mayoral overspends had occurred under all parties in the past.

May was also the month of London's local elections, with all council seats in Harrow were up for grabs.

At the time of the election the council was being ruled by the Conservatives in a minority administration with the support of the Independent Labour Group, which had split from the Labour group a year before.

Labour took back control of the Harrow Council after a tumultuous year of politics in the borough, winning 34 seats, to the Conservatives’ 26, with two independents and one Liberal Democrat.

The leader elect of the council David Perry said after the victory the hard work would really begin and that the Labour party was more united than ever.

May was also the month of one of the biggest hauls of illegally imported alcohol ever seen in the borough.

The booze was seized by police who were joined by officers from HM Revenue and Customs as they raided four off-licences in Wealdstone.

The amount was so large that a lorry was needed to remove the gallons of alcohol, which cleared one shop of its entire stock.
