A restaurant owner came under pressure in April for having a Saddam Hussein poster in his front window.

There was outrage from the general public over the display of the image at This Is It Lebanese restaurant, in Station Road, Harrow.

Harrow Borough Council issued the owner of the eatery with an enforcement notice to remove the image which some said they found offensive.

However the owner said the display of the former Iraqi dictator was a protest over the human rights issues of his people in his homeland, Kuwait.

April was also the month when it was announced a new secondary school could be built on playing fields.

The Education Funding Agency announced the approval for the Avanti School’s trust to build a new Hindu school on the Whitchurch Playing Fields, in Stanmore.

The announcement was cautiously welcomed by people living near the site but concerns were raised about the impact of a new school on traffic in the area.

The site had been an area of controversy in the past, with the possibility of a new sports complex being built on the fields.

April was also the month Harrow Borough Council announced it would withdraw its enforcement notice ordering Barnet Football Club to pull down its new stand and floodlight.

The council said it withdrew the notice following independent legal advice so it would not have to fight a planning appeal launched by the club.

Barnet FC chairman Tony Kleanthous said money had been wasted by both sides on legal and planning advisers, but said he wanted to move forward and continue the club’s work with the community.
