Parents have launched a petition to create new parking restrictions and prevent “reckless" drivers from "thundering" down their street.

Householders in Cecil Park, Pinner, opposite Reddiford School, are fed up with people constantly blocking their driveways and making “dangerous” three point turns during the school run.

They have asked Harrow Borough Council to create a no-parking zone between 3pm and 4pm to ease the flow of traffic.

More than 70 householders in Cecil Park signed the petition urging the authority to improve safety measures and claiming the only feasible option would be to create the no-parking zone between 3pm and 4pm.

But a counter petition opposing the new measures has also been put forward, which could prevent the restrictions.

Liza Hunter says her young son was “almost killed” by a Land Rover accelerating up the street a few years ago.

Her two children, Kate, 13 and Ben, 11, walk to and from school elsewhere in the borough every day, but she fears they could be hit by a car.

The 43-year-old said: “The lives of our children are being put in jeopardy. They could be killed trying to get out of our road and that’s a petrifying thought.

“It’s a total rat run and we take our lives into our own hands on this street, but what can we do? We can’t put our lives on hold during rush hour.

“People opposing the petition are those who want to park on our road to access the high street. That’s crazy – I wouldn’t create a petition because I sometimes want to park on Oxford Street.”

Justine Bancroft, 44, lives in Cecil Park with her children, Louis, 13, and Millie, 11.

She said: “I’ve had years of walking to and from West Lodge Primary School and having to dodge reckless drivers thundering down the street and watching them carry out dangerous manoeuvres.

“Our street becomes gridlocked and I have had enough of not being able to get out of my driveway because it’s been blocked by selfish drivers.

“Something has to be done – this can’t go on this way.”

The petition is supported by Conservative Councillor John Nickolay.

A Harrow Borough Council spokesman said: “We are currently in the process of consulting over parking in the Cecil Park area. No decisions have been made yet and the matter will be discussed at the next Traffic and Road Safety Advisory Panel (TARSAP). “We are aware of the concerns of residents and these will be raised at the next meeting.

A statement from Reddiford School said it was objecting to parking restrictions from 3pm to 4pm as it feared this could worsen the problem.

It said: “We take the safety of our children very seriously and work closely with Harrow’s traffic enforcement department and discuss strategies that we include in our travel plan.

“We make every endeavour to encourage parents to act responsibly when dropping off and picking up their children.

“Reddiford School has no legal jurisdiction over inconsiderate drivers. It is also the case that we have to deal with other members of the public, who are not parents.

“We would certainly welcome the presence of parking wardens who do have legal jurisdiction and would actively help to improve the current situation.”
