Dancers attempted to break a world record by tap dancing to raise money for a children's charity.

Lyrics School of Performing Arts hosted a tapathon at the Harrow Arts Centre, in Uxbridge Road, Hatch End, in support of Children in Need.

The event, which takes place annually, saw dancers across the country perform the same tap routine at the same time.

Last year's tapathon set the world record for 7,596 dancers, but Selina Johnson, who works for Lyric School, believed that total has been beaten

She said: "Everyone was hyper, even the adults were getting excited. Everybody was nervously practising the routine, but it was very good.

"I love how much the kids get from it. It was even better for them being in a theatre."

Hosted by the Lyrics School of Performing Arts, the tapathon included dancers from Rosie's Tappers, Deborah Sanger, Mary Whitney and Pinner Theatre Dance, who were also raising money for the type 1 diabetes charity JDRF.

Organisers will officially discover how much they raised next week.

They are also waiting to hear whether they will be entered in the Guinness World Book of Records.
