Harrow Borough Council says the redevelopment of a town centre eyesore is “long overdue”.

The comments come after the display of plans for the former Royal Mail sorting office site in College Road, Harrow, by the Hyde Group.

The early proposals include up to 350 homes, a new central library and public space in the heart of the town centre.

While the tower was not part of proposals unveiled last week, the company has announced that a 19-storey building will be part of later plans.

Planning permission to build a 19-storey structure was accepted by the Secretary of State, subject to "world-class architectural design" being achieved.

Council cabinet member for planning and regeneration Keith Ferry said: “I think most people will think it’s great to see something happening on the site and it’s been long overdue.

“We have been mucking about with this site for about seven years now and it is an eyesore in the town centre.

“It will be good to open up College Road to the whole of community and possibly give Harrow a new central library which has been needed for a long time.”
