Gardeners are busy laying out paving slabs and pruning flowerbeds to create a serene space for hospice patients.

North London Hospice, in Woodside Lane, North Finchley, will unveil its new Margaret Thatcher Tribute Garden at the end of next month.

The garden, which will feature flowers, herbs and shrubs to attract wildlife including butterflies and birds, is being built in memory of the former Finchley MP and prime minister.

Bedrooms will overlook the gardens and each patient will have their own private and secluded space on the patio outside.

Jennifer Sheehy, who works at the hospice, said: “It’s a fitting tribute to Margaret Thatcher and a great way for her legacy to live on.

“It’s a wonderful project. It will be a calm space for patients to relax in, while taking in the beautiful and colourful surroundings.”

Bedrooms will overlook the gardens and each patient will have their own private and secluded space on the patio outside.

A water fountain will also be built in the garden, which will be open to patients and their families 24 hours a day.

People attended a memorial dinner in Mrs Thatcher's honour at the hospice in May to help raise the money to build the garden.

Ms Sheehy added: “It’s very exciting now it’s all starting to take shape.”

The garden will be unveiled at a closed event on November 23.
