More than 3,000 fines have been issued to drivers turning illegally at a junction - generating hundreds of thousands of pounds for Harrow Borough Council.

A Freedom of Information request submitted to Harrow Borough Council revealed 3,208 penalty charge notices have been issued to people performing an illegal right turn from The Bridge, in Wealdstone, onto the A409.

Each PCN fine is £130 which means Harrow council could have pocketed more than £400,000 from the junction between January 1, this year and August 31.

A spokeswoman for Harrow Council said: “This particular stretch of road is designed to give priority to buses through Wealdstone and motorists are prohibited from turning right after the station.

“The correct signs are in place and drivers are encouraged to pay attention to these signs to give buses priority and avoid receiving a fine.”

Penalties are paid to the council and money raised pays for highways improvements and travel initiatives for the elderly.

Fines for wrong turns and bus lane contraventions are reduced to £65 if they are paid within 14 days.

The Freedom of Information response also reveals that of the 3,208 fines, the council has received 656 challenges, of which 40 have been successful.

During the period covered, 17 appeal cases have been lodged with the Parking and Traffic Appeals Service, two of which have been successful.
