The roll-out of 20 minutes free on-street parking for shoppers has been completed.

New parking meter machines have been installed in district centres across the borough which Harrow Borough Council hope will help shops and businesses.

The roll-out has been taking place since April this year area by area following a pledge from the council's former Conservative administration.

The scheme has seen the upgrading of Harrow’s on-street ticket machines to include a keypad for motorists to enter their car registration number, which the council hopes will prevent the scheme being abused.

Work has been completed under the Labour administration, which says it will keep the scheme for the next three years.

Cabinet member for business Keith Ferry said: “I am pleased that free parking has now been officially rolled out across the borough which will benefit both residents and businesses in Harrow.

“We are committed to supporting our residents and local businesses which is why we pledged to provide a period of free parking across the borough.

“This new system helps local businesses attract customers who want to stop for short periods to buy items such as bread and milk.”
