Beekeepers toasted the end of the summer season by holding a honey show to raise money for their club.

The Barnet and District Beekeepers Society marked its 100th honey show with an event at Hadley Wood Memorial Hall in High Barnet on Saturday.

It included a honey cake bake off in a competition judged by Mayor of Barnet Councillor Hugh Rayner.

Other competition categories, also judged by the mayor, included best dark honey, best honey overall and best honeycomb.

Publicity officer David Mivled said: “We almost had to close down a few years ago, so reaching 100 made it all the more special for us.

“It was the culmination of a whole year's work and I think the mayor was impressed with what he saw.”

Around 50 people turned up to find out what the buzz is about the hobby.

Over the winter, the hives are not opened as the cold could potentially be deadly to the bees, but they are regularly checked for signs of diseases.

The group, which currently has 99 members, is also looking for more people to learn about the intricacies of beekeeping, which first originated in ancient Egypt.

Mr Mivled added: “I think people have become more interested in bees nowadays, which is why the club is so successful.

“I’m happy the event was a success, it was a good to spread the message about it.”
