The man behind a project to restore a library’s secret garden is calling on the community to get involved.

Russell Sutcliffe is urging people to form a community gardening group to help reinvigorate the garden at Kenton Library, in Kenton Library.

Yesterday Mr Sutcliffe, from the Innocent Pilgrim community gardening project, started planting on the site and says he wants more people to join and help create a group to decide the gardens future.

The project is backed by Harrow Borough Council, which hopes it will encourage more people to go to libraries and help enhance the site.

Mr Sutcliffe said: “All over Harrow there are plots of land that have been neglected over the years.

“The council has less and less money to do things with them so what we want to do is get the community involved and help decide what to do with this space.

“This really is a secret garden, because most people probably don’t even realise it exists when they walk past the library.

“There is a lot we can do with this area but it will all be down to the community. We could plant flowers and create garden people can enjoy or plant vegetables and make it a mini-allotment.

“The important thing is we need people to get involved.”

Pratima Shah, who joined in with the planting, said: “I think this is a really good project because I’m sure there are some who want to get into gardening do not have their own space to do so.

“It also really encourages the whole community to work together and create something.”

The project at Kenton Library will be running over the coming year and is in need of more volunteer gardeners to help, with tools, training and guidance being provided.
