The decision to reinstate the role of chief executive at Harrow Borough Council could be reviewed.

The council cabinet's decision  last week to bring back the role could be examined by the call-in sub-committee following a request for the Conservative group.

Last week senior councillors from the Labour administration to bring back the role, which had been scrapped by the former Conservative administration in November last year to save money.

Following May’s local elections the Labour administrations consulted 5,000 people including council staff, councillors and union members on proposals to bring back the role.

Just 384 responded, but two thirds were in favour of reappointing a chief executive.

Conservative group leader Councillor Susan Hall said: “With all the cuts Labour are planning to make to vital services, restoring such a highly-paid position is the wrong decision at the wrong time.

"That being the case, call-in is more about the process behind the decision - and typically Labour have failings there, too.

“They kept the consultation options as narrow as they could, they ignored expert independent advice that restoring the role is not needed, and they’re going against policies agreed by full council earlier in the year.

“So not only have Labour made a very poor decision, they’ve made it in a very poor way.”

A spokesman for Harrow council said: “I can confirm there has been a request to call in the cabinet recommendation over the senior management structure.

"Members will now have the next few days to consider the issues.”
