Spiders, snakes and a giant millipede were just some of the micro mythical beasts children met today.

More than 30 children and parents attended the 'creepy crawlies from mythology' event at Wealdstone Library in High Road, today.

The event was part of Harrow Libraries summer reading challenge, which this year has had the theme of myths and legends.

Children were shown the creatures and told about the mythical stories some of them appeared in, such as the bearded dragon lizard.

Chris Padwick, who was at the event with his son Matthew, eight, said: “I thought it was a great event and the children really loved it.

“It was very well presented and educational for the children. It really sparked their imagination.”

The annual challenge, which will end on Saturday September 13, involves reading six books over the school holidays. Those who complete it get a medal and certificate.

Heather Prior, children development manager from Harrow Libraries, said: “We have been delighted with this year’s uptake of the summer reading challenge. It has been even better than previous year’s.

“This has been a great event and it’s good to see so many people attend because it really engages the children.”
