A church bell rang to mark the start of the First World War as part of a series of events to remember events 100 years ago.

St Mary’s Church in Church Hill, Harrow-on-the-Hill, rang the bell 96 times, with each one representing members of the church who died in the war on Monday.

The church also has a small exhibition on display looking back at Harrow-on-the-Hill and the surrounding area at the start of the war.

It was one of many events on the day and was the start of many to come in Harrow over the next four years to mark the Great War.

Harrow Borough Council cabinet member for community Sue Anderson said: "Harrow has its own place in First World War history and the events coming up will allow us to reflect on how the war affected ordinary people.

“There will be plenty of opportunities for young people to learn about the war, with the enduring hope that the country will never see its like again.”

On Monday evening the council took part in the national lights out act of remembrance which saw buildings across the country switch off non-essential lights between the hours of 10pm and 11pm.
