People living near a tennis club that was recently put up for sale say reopening the courts will be great for the whole community.

Neighbours of North Harrow Tennis Club, in Cumberland Road, produced a business plan for the site after it was put on the market by its trustees earlier this year.

People living in the surrounding streets of Gloucester Road, Cumberland Road and Westmorland Road launched a campaign to stop the club from being sold.

They feared the site would be sold for development and housing would be built, but in recent weeks the site was removed from the market by the trustees.

Alkesh Patel, who has been fighting to get the club reopened for the community, said: “We presented a business plan a couple of months ago.

“We have the full support of the whole community to get the club back open. People have pledged to join and play regularly.

“It was a solid plan which would have been great for the whole community here, but we just haven’t heard anything back.

“We feel we’re in limbo at the moment and we don’t know what is happening. The club has had thousands spent on it with lottery grants but that could all be lost which would be a shame.”

Solicitors representing the trustees of the club told the Harrow Times that the site was taken off the market more than two weeks ago.

They added the trustees wanted time to fully consider the future of the club and that process could take up to six months.

No guide price was set for the site and the club does not have vehicle access, which could mean any prospective buyer may have to purchase a bordering house to make room.

The club was founded in the 1920s but the courts have not been used for the past three years.
