Hospital bosses are confident about the future as they prepare to close a hospital’s A&E next month.

A&E services at North West London Hospital Trust will be changing from September 10 with the closure of the department at Central Middlesex Hospital.

As a result, patients needing emergency and trauma services will be sent to Northwick Park Hospital.

Trust chief executive David McVittie said: “It is important for people to know the lights are still on at Central Middlesex with the urgent care centre open for 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

“We strongly believe that central Middlesex will continue to be a thriving local hospital, albeit a different one, looking after our local community for a long time to come.”

Earlier this year it was revealed the trust was in the bottom five in the country in meeting government A&E waiting time targets while Northwick Park’s new £21million A&E department is due to come into use in the autumn this year.

Since the opening of the urgent care centre at Central Middlesex, the number of patients attending A&E has fallen with to an average of 38 patients a day.

When asked how Northwick Park will cope with the closure of Central Middlesex A&E, director of operations Tina Benson said: “It is important to realise that not all Central Mid patients will be coming to Northwick Park’s A&E as some of them will be taken to other hospitals near to where they live.”

Mr McVittie said: “We have made investments into the department with more beds, more nurses and more consultants.

“But it’s not just about the front of house, because we have made improvements in other departments in the hospital.

“The new A&E will help. The logic and the layout of the whole new department will really help make things better. It’s brilliant.”

He added: “I am very confident about the future of this hospital. We were one of the best in London last winter for emergency care”

The new Northwick Park A&E will be completed by October and is due to open by November.

Last week Secretary of State for Health Jeremy Hunt visited Northwich Park Hospital, and told the Harrow Times it could be “one of the best in the country” once its new A&E unit is completed.
