Stylists strive for winning cuts

YOUNG hairdressing stylists competed for places at a high-fashion hair show during heats on January 8 and 9.

First and second year NVQ Modern Apprentices saw tough competition as they set about creating modern, original designs in Uxbridge College's professional-level training salons.

The best 20 were chosen to display their hair designs in a catwalk show at the Beck Theatre in Hayes on April 30, which will be sponsored by beauty product retailer Capital Hair and Beauty Ltd.

Judges included salon owners from the area, some of whom train their apprentices through the college, but who did not judge the work of students from their own staff.

The judges were: Kevin Duigenan from Kevin Joseph in Hayes; Jan Wolfenden from Wolf's in Uxbridge; Mario Koutsoudes from First Impressions; Tony Armstrong from Armstrongs in Ashford, Middlesex; Roger Withers, a business development manager for Capital, and Jo Kearvell, Head of Beauty and Hairdressing at Uxbridge College.

Jo said: "The standard was really high and the judges had a difficult job deciding who should go through to finals. The competition has inspired our students to focus on coming up with some really original creations."
