More primary schools could increase in size as part of a third round of school expansions.

The proposed third round was announced in a meeting of the Harrow Borough Council’s cabinet yesterday evening following a revised estimate of the pupil population during the coming years.

Harrow Council is currently in negotiations with two schools over increasing their numbers to deal with increased demand by 2016.

These include Grimsdyke School, in Hatch End and Stag Lane School in Edgware. Feasibility studies are currently being carried out.

Construction work on the authority’s first phase of school expansion is well under way with some of the eight schools completed for the start of this school year in September 2013.

Proposals for the expansion of nine other schools in the second phase have been going through the council’s planning committee during the past three months with work due to start later this year.

This phase will provide a further 3,000 places in primary, secondary and special educational schools with some opening with extra classes this September this year and others in the 2015 school year.

For the phase three the council could possibly begin consultations about specific school expansions in the autumn of this year.

The council says the expansions are needed to allow it “to fulfil its statutory duties to provide sufficient school places” in the borough.
