Harrow Times: Pupils help re-open park's outdoor gym Pupils help re-open park's outdoor gym

Schoolchildren sang songs and danced for the opening of a park's refurbished outdoor gym.

The pupils from Norbury School helped re-open the gym equipment in Harrow Recreation Ground as part of their sports day activities.

They were joined by the Mayor of Harrow after Harrow Borough Council carried out the work on the gym which is one of the most popular in the borough.

Headteacher of the school Lou Browning said: “Health and fitness is something really important to our school and we make sure we look at the wellbeing of the whole child.

“Academia is very important but so is a healthy lifestyle for all our kids. We have our own outdoor gym equipment at our school and the children love using it.”

At the event the school Welldon Crescent was presented with a Bronze London Healthy School Award for its work in the last three years.

The school’s choir sang several songs before the gym was officially opened by the Mayor Ajay Maru.

He said: “These outdoor facilities are very popular with so many people across Harrow and they are a great way to keep people fit and healthy.”

The council is also opening two new outdoor gyms in Headstone Manor Recreation Ground and in West Harrow Recreation Ground.

It is hoped the new outdoor gyms will mean people benefit from more access to facilities which can reduce the risk of developing conditions such as cancer, high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, and obesity.

Cabinet member for community Cllr Sue Anderson said: “If you’re looking to get fit and active this summer, our parks and outdoor gyms are the place to be.

“I am pleased to be opening our two new outdoor gyms which will give residents more opportunities to engage in health and fitness activities for free regardless of age or ability.

“They have proven to be popular amongst residents and research shows that users are making good use of the equipment.”

These outdoor gyms should be available in every single one of Harrow's open spaces.
The Country is facing an obesity and diabetes epidemic, allied with the high levels of heart disease prevalent in people of Asian descent there needs to be a more widespread availability of free exercise equipment in our Borough.
