A police sergeant has been commended by the Metropolitan Police’s most senior officer for saving a man’s life.
Police Sergeant Chas Campbell-Stanway was presented a Royal Humane Society Testimonial by Met Commissioner Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe at New Scotland Yard last week.
PC Campbell-Stanway was the first on the scene at St Georges Shopping centre in February 2013 when police received reports of a man threatening to commit suicide by jumping off the roof.
The officer was alone on the roof and managed to build a rapport with the man who was sitting on the edge of the building, arranging for tea and biscuits to be brought up.
The man eventually decided to walk over to safety but in doing so fell onto an air duct below injuring himself.
PC Campbell-Stanway jumped down to the duct and held on to the man for about ten minutes until ladders were brought to the scene.
