An MP has raised concerns over lack of money to help provide more than 120 beds for a hospital’s A&E department.

Gareth Thomas MP spoke last week in the House of Commons about his disappointment over the lack of action to tackle the increasing pressure on A&E services at Northwick Park Hospital.

The board of North West London NHS Hospital Trust recently identified an urgent need for 123 more beds to address the “underlying capacity gap” to co,e with the closure of Ealing A&E and the downgrading of services at Central Middlesex Hospital.

The Harrow West Labour MP said: “Northwick Park Hospital is already one of the worst at meeting the target of treating all patients at A&E within four hours, and the board at the hospital trust have identified an urgent need for 123 more beds.

“With the nearby A&E at Ealing Hospital set to close, residents in Harrow will be concerned that the Tory-led government is failing to provide the necessary funding to address the increasing pressure on local NHS services.”

During his speech in the Commons he said: “I am disappointed that there are no measures in the Queen’s Speech to tackle the growing crisis in the NHS.

“In my constituency, there are problems at Northwick Park hospital. Our A&E department is under significant pressure; it is one of the worst in terms of meeting the target to see 95 per cent of A&E patients within four hours.”

Earlier this year the North West London Hospital Trust was found to be among the five worst out of 145 trusts for waiting times with 87 per cent of patients seen within four hours for the 2013/2014 year.

Northwick Park’s new £21million emergency department is due to open later this year.

The trust says it will be closer to other emergency services, such as acute assessment and intensive treatment units, operating theatres and wards, which will make the service more efficient for patients.
