MP for Harrow East, Bob Blackman calls for potential donors to sign up to charity register

An MP has joined the fight against blood cancers and is calling on people to sign up as potential donors.

Harrow East MP Bob Blackman is calling for more people to sign up to cancer charity Anthony Nolan's bone marrow register.

Recently the charity's register has been mapped for the first time and reveals in Harrow East there are more than 1,300 people willing to donate their stem cells or bone marrow to save the life of a stranger.

Mr Blackman said: "I have 1,353 heroes on the register here in Harrow East but the challenge continues. I'm hunting for more crusaders to sign up today, so we can fight blood cancer together.

"It is something truly heroic to give a stranger a second chance at life. This is why I'm proud to champion this cause to my constituents."

The charity is now celebrating its 40th anniversary and in that time has been matching people willing to donate their bone marrow to patients in desperate need of a transplant.

Those interested in signing have to be from the age of 16 to 30 and in good health.

To do so people simply have to sign up online by clicking here.
