The woman behind a ladies football league says she is amazed at the success of the first season of games.

In September last year Sheena Hirani from Harrow set up a pilot league which was the first of its kind in London.

In January the project received backing from Harrow Borough Council and Middlesex FA to expand into The Middlesex Women Desi Football League.

Since then the league has gone from strength to strength attracting new teams from across Harrow and neighbouring London boroughs.

The league is open to woman from all backgrounds but organisers hope to attract players from black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds.

Ms Hirani said: "I'm so proud of what we have achieved and to see so many other getting involved in football.

"I'm just amazed at the response we have had from teams all over London. When we first started we didn’t know how many people would be interested but things have just grown and grown.

"The support we have had from the council and the Middlesex FA has been amazing and has really helped.

“What I love about the league is that it has a diverse selection of teams from across the different communities of Harrow. It really represents groups in the borough.”

Referee for the league Ellie May Goodey said: “The girl’s league was a fantastic experience to be a part of; I grew to know all the girls.

"I hope to continue to be a part of the league and wish it success for the future.”

As part of the league players taking part in the matches can also get training and coaching courses.

The second season has just finished and Ms Hirani hopes to start its next one at the beginning of June, running two divisions, one for seven-a-side teams and one for five-a-side.
