Hundreds of people enjoyed activities at events across the borough at the start of Harrow Active weekend.

Dance demonstrations and sport sessions for families were held, and there were yoga demonstrations and information stalls for people to find out more about how to get fit and healthy.

The weekend’s events, organised by Harrow Borough Council, were kicked off yesterday in Harrow town centre by Deputy Mayor Camilla Bath before a performance by the Rochford Irish Dance group.

Cabinet member for health and wellbeing Cllr Simon Williams said: “The weekend is about letting people of Harrow know the resources they have on their doorstep.

“We have a huge amount of green space with our parks and a large number of sports clubs always looking for members.

“This is not just about people signing up to clubs but about getting people into good habits and becoming more active.

“Obesity and diabetes are growing problems in Harrow and doing simple things like walks and so on can help prevent these health issues.”

Also during the day there were events at the Hive football stadium, in Camrose Avenue, tiny tots tennis at the Cedars Youth and Community Centre and Taekwondo taster sessions at Whitmore High School.

People also enjoyed dance and performing arts taster sessions at the Harrow Arts centre and displays in the town centre throughout the day.

Sports clubs were also out in the town centre showcasing the variety of activities available across Harrow.

Helen Clague youth sports coordinator of Kenton sports club said: “I think this is a great way for clubs all over Harrow to tell people what sports are available.

“We have the problem that people don’t necessarily know what they can do in Kenton. I think in Harrow we could make more use of the facilities we have.

General manager of Stanmore Golf club Alan Knott said: “It has been a great chance to meet with people and let them know about the club.

“Sometimes people may not know where our club is, so to be in the town centre to spread the word is very helpful.”

Today there will be even more events going on with hundreds of people due to take part in Sports Relief events at the Bannister Sports Centre and Harrow Leisure Centre throughout the day.
