Former borough commander Dal Babu OBE to lead Harrow Borough Council racism investigation

An investigation into alleged racism within Harrow Borough Council will be investigated by a former borough police commander.

In November last year leader of the council Susan Hall announced the investigation into an allegation of racism made by one individual member.

Dal Babu, the former borough commander of Harrow Police, has been appointed to lead the investigation into the claim.

He will talk to council officers and councillors and will produce a report with recommendations by April 11.

Mr Babu said : “My years in the Metropolitan police have given me a good span of experience about race claims, for example from my role as chair of the National Association of Muslim Police Officers to being the police commander on the ground in Harrow during protests by anti-Islamic groups outside the mosque.

“On these occasions I strive to establish the facts and stop sometimes overheated rhetoric obscuring the real issue.

“I know Harrow Council well, and I think Cllr Hall and the authority have taken a brave step in establishing this enquiry, which will be independent and professional.”

Cllr Hall said: “Harrow is a diverse borough and the council has always reflected this, both in the representation of members and the highly professional approach of officers to their work.

“While I have always believed there is no issue about race among council employees, as a precaution I asked for a senior independent figure to look into these claims.

“The result of this investigation will be published as this council believes in transparency and has nothing to hide.

“I am confident that in an experienced professional of Dal Babu’s calibre, we have found the right person to take this enquiry forward.”

Since retiring from the Metropolitan Police after 30 years of service and serving as borough commander for four year Mr Babu has become Chairman of Harrow Age UK.

Former Met Police Borough Commander Dal Babu is precisely the man who can look into these serious allegations even-mindedly.He is held in high regard even today, both by ethnic minority groups as well as the indigenous population, right across the board,in our borough. His popularity comes second only to his penchant for community engagement. He knows people first-hand especially within Harrow Council and will not be bamboozled. He is trustworthy and will handle this with expertise.

I really am pleased we have handed this delicate mater into his capable hands. He is not only skilled and well-versed in issues surrounding racism but is a man of high integrity and will not takes sides with anybody.

I am sure we all can expect a fair and balanced judgement from this highly professional, popular senior Police officer who is a feather in the Metropolitan Police's cap even after his retirement from it.Age UK is lucky to have him at the helm.

Are you having a laugh stop the Susie spin.

Susie you know there is an issue about race amongst council employees, the council's own reports identify this.
You yourself raised concerns over how in your words "the first Sri Lankan Leader has been treated"
Isn't that why you got on board to steady the ship?

There has been no mention of what happened to this little, three year old girl.

The protest by 50 Somali women against the adoption took place on 29th January 2014.

Will those same 50 Somali women be demonstrating outside the Civic Centre in Harrow against Female Genital Mutilation? There silence on this subject is deafening so I presume they must condone it.

I saw on the news yesterday that London Mayor Boris is campaigning on FGM. I remember UKIP candidate Jeremy Zeid asking if soemthing could be done about this practice at a public police meeting.

Unbelievably there have been no arrests of people who perform this barbaric practice although it is against the law and is tantamount to child abuse.

Sonoo Malkani, get your facts checked up as you know when HPCCG was dismantled, Cllr Susan Hall and Dal Babu were working as a team.

I would have thought it malicious to accuse Dal Babu and Councillor Susan Hall of being in cahoots.to engineer a result to suit themselves equated to a libellous comment.

You cannot accuse people of being potentially corrupt without proof. Dal Babu during his time as borough commander has shown himself to be an upright and honest person.

Also Councillor Hall has done nothing to labelled as corrupt either.

If you are the calibre of candidate standing for councillor standing for election in Wealdstone my hear sinks.

"ethnic minority groups"

Harrow no longer has an ethnic majority group (source: 2011 Census). That means all residents of the borough are part of an ethnic minority.

Miss Malkani - which 'ethnic minority' groups are you referring to? Somali, White British, Tamil?

Pravin Shah---I HAVE got my facts right.Kindly do not accuse the former Met Police Borough Commander of helping to dismantle the HPCCG.He was a firm supporter and always encouraged us in our works.

Dal Babu did whatever he could as objectively as possible, to help us show there was no wrong doing and stated this in public at the HPCCG meeting along with GLA member, Cllr Shah.Dal Babu could only help advise us up to a point, for obvious reasons.

We respected and appreciated the difficult position he was placed in and decided to do things our won way.All we wanted was to keep our borough and our citizens safe and harmonious.Thank God,we have manged to achieve that to date. Our grateful thanks to all our supporters and the wonderful people of Harrow.

We were particularly conscious of the limitations placed on Harrow Police and our Borough Commander with regard to the continuation and future of the HPCCG and decided it would be best to handle our struggle independently, with whatever support the local Police service could provide us with, to help keep Harrow safe.

You must acknowledge, however reluctantly, that we managed to stay afloat somehow ,with the goodwill of Harrow Police,Harrow Council ,Harrow Equalities Centre, and a host of other good folk ,especially the management committee of the HPCCG who paid monies from their own pocket to keep the flag flying and keep Harrow "LIVE".

Please stop painting a false picture of the former Metropolitan Police Borough Commander and trying to unnecessarily muddy the waters ,even before he sets off to investigate rather serious allegations regarding racism.

Let us be patient and respectful and wait for his report,in April, before casting ridiculous aspersions ,which may be considered libelous.
